A Life Encounter with Kantele

Ivone Maia da Silva of the Ninho (Nest) school plays Kantele with students

By Flávia Betti Brincaded, Cântaro - Center for Music Development, Belo Horizante, Brazil

This year the lyre and singing group, Cântaro, together with the young lyrists of Ninho (Nest) school, played at the Rudolf Steiner School bazaar in Belo Horizonte. Professor Mariana, who coordinates the group of teachers and assistants at Ninho where Flavia does work with the Kanteles, writes:

Cântaro brings this song to so many places, touching the lives of so many people! Today, I heard the testimony of someone from our team (Ivone, in the photo above) whose life story would never have had contact with this song that Cântaro brings to people's lives. She spoke of how she first saw Flavia take the lyre out of the box as if it were something from another world, her eyes sparkling as she spoke of the great admiration for this teacher, her motivation, her steadiness, even in the moments of pre-presentation anxiety. This person takes the kantele wherever she can and introduces it to all the people she can, with such love sown and cultivated. All my admiration for you, Flávia, in recognition of this trajectory of 5 years of partnership with Ninho. And also to Cântaro, for providing the social quality of this music that touches everyone.

Here are some comments from Cântaro members about their experience playing with the Ninho school:

  • It was a delight to play in the kindergarten room. Slowly the children were quieting, and .... listening! (Mariana) How nice, besides hearing, to 'see' a child playing lyre! (Lilian)

  • It was soooo good to play there, in the middle of the children's energy ... In my opinion, it was much better than it would have been if we had done it in the school auditorium .... I think the lyre is reaffirming itself as an instrument of smaller and more special environments! (Karla)

  • Goodness to see and hear! Congratulations to all! The world really needs these soft sounds! (Adriana)

  • It was very special – even the presentation and contact with these children since the rehearsals in Cäntaro. Very nice – a gift! As for the space, it was perfect! I have this food also warming my heart and soul. (Tarina)

  • Thank you, guys! Today I was singing! (Monica Godoy)
