Crowd Funding to help replace a cracked lyre

In early December, Diane Ingraham Barnes discovered a crack in her beloved solo lyre. This instrument has been her performance lyre for a number of years.  She took it to an experienced woodworker in her area, and although together, they tried various approaches to solve the problem, the crack continued to lengthen to the point that the lyre has now become unusable. At this moment, Diane is gratefully borrowing the lyre of a friend to use on the frequent occasions for which she is asked to perform, but she needs to purchase her own lyre as soon as possible.  Fortunately, she has been able to identify a beautiful solo soprano built by lyre builder Horst Nieder in Germany that would perfectly match the quality of her voice.  Unfortunately, she does not currently have the funds to purchase this lyre for its asking price of $2700 plus shipping costs – a total delivered cost of $3000.

Diane has been interested in and involved with music her whole life. She joined the junior choir of her family church in second grade, and by high school, she was soloing with the choir. She studied voice in high school, attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she earned a degree in music education, and began teaching music in a public school as well as directing a children's choir at her church. Upon marrying her first husband, Diane learned to play the guitar, and they began performing folk music together across the country. She had two sons, the second of whom brought her to curative work with music. While working at the Fellowship Community in Spring Valley, NY, she came across anthroposophy and Waldorf education. She then went to Rudolf Steiner College for teacher training and began studying Uncovering the Voice singing with Jurgen Schriefer and discovered the lyre. Christof-Andreas Lindenberg helped her to find her first Gaertner alto lyre, which became her companion for many years. Singing with the lyre remains a major part of Diane’s artistic work.

There is more to Diane’s story and professional life that involves all of the children and adults for whom she has offered healing, therapeutic work; all the classes and choirs she directed, conveying the joy of singing; and all the festivals, church, and community music she volunteers to do out of her love of singing with the lyre.

Diane’s family members and friends are coming together to support her life as a musician, music teacher, and music therapist by helping her to purchase this new lyre.
